Tools for art and conservation science. Potentialities of photography and portable optical microscop

What: ScienceRetreats and HERCULES, at the University of Evora, are jointly organizing the 1st edition of the course Tools for Art and Conservation Science. Photography and optical microscopy are among the oldest available tools for conservation science in the laboratory, but for in situ research the use of costly, complex and sometimes bulky equipments can still present some practical restrictions. This lead us to focus the 1st edition of this course on teaching resourceful techniques for Heritage conservation. Our target audience includes historians, architects, art technicians and lovers of wall paintings in general.

Using 17th and 19th century wall paintings at House Morgado do Esporão as case studies, this workshop will teach how to assess the painters craft and evaluate the overall state of conservation with cost-effective, light and easily handled digital cameras and optical microscopes. This 5-days training course aims to provide theoretical and practical skills for in loco documentation and analysis of paint layers in different working conditions and light sources including image capture, photo editing; interpretation of the photographs and of optical images for art, art history and conservation purposes.

The program comprises:

- Comprehensive overview of wall paintings conservation science;

- Photographic documentation in visible and raking light with standard and advanced imaging tools: photo mosaics, panoramic views, Reflectance Transforming Image RTI and macro.

- Technical photography in three spectral bands with a digital transformed camera for full spectrum - ultraviolet (360-400nm), visible Vis (400-780nm) and Infrared IR ( 780-1100nm) - in five technical methods: UV fluorescence (UVF), UV reflected (UVR), near infrared photography (NIR) and infrared false color (IRFC)

- Digital optic microscopy and microphotography of paint layers and pigments with 20x to 453 x amplifications.

- Integration of results and discussion
